Our Acknowledgement Of Country

Banyule Junior Football Club is proud to acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people as Traditional Custodians of the land upon which we meet, and play sport, and in doing so we pay respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, past and present, who have resided in the area and have been an integral part of the region’s history.

Indigenous Jumper Launch

On Sunday the 18th May 2025 we launched our Indigenous Jumpers to coincide with the Sir Doug Nicholls round.

The design was created by Jamie Humphries, one of our talented Youth Girls, who visited the Cave on the day to share the story and inspiration behind her artwork. Jamie was joined by Elizabeth Patena from North East Community Fund, who generously provided the grant that made the jumpers possible, local councillor Matt Wood, and Uncle Charles Pakana, a respected Banyule community elder.

Here’s Jamie’s Story. On Wadawurrung country, where the blue of oceans and wetlands meets the creamy coastline marked by the stories of Old People’s footprints, Waa the Crow is known as a protector, while Bunjil the Eagle is the creator. Just as Waa, a clever crow often seen flying between Melbourne’s Fitzroy Gardens and the Banyule wetlands, showed empathy by returning a lost locket to a distraught woman, his presence embodies a connection between the natural and human worlds. This act of kindness, witnessed by those who knew both the city and the surrounding areas, echoes the deep ties of family and the cleansing spirit of eucalyptus smoke that continues to connect generations to this land.

Thank you, Jamie. We are deeply grateful to you for sharing your history with us. Your powerful design will be proudly worn by your Banyule friends for many years to come, carrying your story and spirit with it.
